Jack by A.M. Homes

unnamed

A.M. Homes’s first book Jack is about a boy whose father comes out as gay. This was pretty new territory for a novel in 1989, which is when my mother went to Politics & Prose Bookstore in D.C. and got Homes to sign the book for me. This was pretty new territory for my mom and me, too, because it had only been a year and half since I had come out to her as gay. My mom’s supportive gesture was all the more meaningful to me because in that fall of ’89, my senior year of college, I was just starting write my own first attempt at a novel. Knowing that Homes had grown up in our town and attended the same high school as me, my mom, in giving me the signed book, was saying in more ways than one: “I believe in you.”
