“We were both completely baffled.”

Lamb in Love by Carrie Brown

I adored Carrie Brown’s romantic comedy “Lamb in Love” when it came out in 1999. We struck up an email correspondence, and I edited some of her book reviews for The Washington Post. In 2007, I finally had the chance to meet Carrie in person. Over lunch, we talked about the challenges and joys of teaching college students and raising children with special needs. I felt like we’d known each other for years, which, I suppose, in a way, we had. Just before she drove off, I remembered to ask her to sign my copy of Lamb in Love. When she opened it to the title page, though, there was her signature and a note to me. We were both completely baffled.
